2011 MLK Coalition: 'Southwest Louisiana In Step with the Dream'

The 27th Annual MLK Coalition Memorial Breakfast and Family Day Festival once again promises to be a most stupendous event honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The 2011 theme is ‘Southwest Louisiana In step with the dream’. It embraces Dr. King’s vision of inclusion and togetherness. The MLK Commemoration begins with the 27th Annual Memorial Breakfast, 7:30 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2011 at Trinity Baptist Church, 1800 Country Club Road, where Steve James is Senior Pastor.
The Memorial breakfast will honor those who envisioned the possibility of this celebration as well as individuals who contribute to the growth and elevation of the Southwest Louisiana community. It will be televised live on KPLC-TV starting at 9 a.m.  The event will feature a dynamic national speaker, the 2011 MLK award winners, including the very first recipient of the MLK Unsung Hero Award, and winners of the essay contest from the high school, middle school, and elementary school divisions. The program will also feature entertainment by the Lagrange High School Gospel choir accompanied by the Trinity Baptist Church Orchestra as well other community talent to be announced.
The MLK Unsung Hero and other award recipients will be selected from community nominations this year. Forms are available in Southwest Louisiana at all Market Basket stores in Lake Charles, Iowa, Sulphur, Dequincy, Westlake, Lake Arthur, Vinton, Kinder, and Welsh. In addition, the MLK Coalition is sponsoring the Gospel Hit Stage play, ‘Sometimes Love Ain’t Enough’ written and directed by Tim Prater at Central School of Arts Auditorium, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, January 15, 2011; and the Gospel Extravaganza featuring local gospel choirs at Throne of Grace Fellowship Sunday, January 16, 2011 starting at 2 p.m.
The grand finale of this incredible MLK commemoration is Family Day Monday, January 17, 2011. Mayor Randy Roach and the City of Lake Charles will join the MLK Coalition, Vibe 105 Foundation and KZWA-104.9 FM for a huge MLK Day Parade and Family Day at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Those wearing the MLK commemorative T-shirt are invited to march in the parade.
Following the parade, festival-goers can participate in the Celebrity Gumbo/Sauce Piquant Cook-off,and business exposition at the Civic Center Coliseum. Local, regional, and national artist will entertain guest throughout the day. The deadline for the cook-off contest or a booth is December 31.
